phpBB2 or phpBB3?

Post by braven112 » Sun Jan 13, 2008 6:22 pm

We are getting bombarded with spam and there are a couple ways to fix it.

If we upgrade to phpBB3 there are many anti spam features that I can use to block this. Overall phpBB3 is much much better but there is one major downside. phpBB3 does not allow us to put the newest posts on the main MFL page.

This specific feature should be available sometime in early spring though.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? We shouldn't lose any of our post or anything like that. If we want to go this route

There are mods of this board available that can also stop new registrations but they can be a pain to install. We'll move to phpBB3 for sure when it allows us to put the newest posts on MFL, so I hesitate to install a bunch of mods only to see us go to phpBB3 anyway.

I would do whatever you feel is best. I just click "message board" to view the post, so it would not bother me to not have the newest post listed. I am sure you will be able to down the road like you stated.

I don't really care about the newest forum posts on the MFL homepage, I never look at it anyway. I always just check here and see if the new post indicator is on any of the forums.

Upgrade, I hate spammers.

Besides, if the upgrade allows subscriptions of forums and threads and allows RSS feeds then all the better.

But you might want to hold out if you can until after the current rule vote is over just in case.

Yeah I never look at the homepage for newest post's anymore, I just click message board myself to check that way! Do what is best, sounds like upgrading is the way to be......

No issues from my perspective if you want to upgrade.

So-so. It's been a looooooong time since I've done much with it. My experience with Javascript is more taking a script already written and figuring it out and tweaking it for my own purpose (like the tab code). But it's been probably 6-7 years since I've done anything hard core with it. I used to hack around phpbb as well but again, 5+ yrs ago.

I'm much more versed with CSS and xHTML. 8)

Good job on the upgrade. Not sure if I like this skin or not. Having the avatars and stuff on the right is a big difference from what you typically expect. But I can get used to it.
